Preparation of ibuprofen/lipid composite microparticles by supercritical fluid technique

WANG Xia, CHEN Hui, GUO Yanni, SU Yuzhong, WANG Hongtao, LI Jun

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 4,   Pages 361-367 doi: 10.1007/s11705-008-0066-4

Abstract: Using the CO- and N-assisted atomization processes, the production of ibuprofen/lipid composite microparticles is investigated, in which the lipid includes myristic acid and tripalmitin. The produced composite particles show similar morphology to that of the pure lipids obtained by the same process. In the case of the N-assisted process, the average size of composite particles is slightly larger than that of the pure lipid particles due to the difficulty of solidification when using N. In the case of the CO-assisted process, the average size of composite particles is slightly smaller than that of the pure myristic acid particles, but slightly larger than that of the pure tripalmitin particles. The dissolution study reveals that the drug release from the ibuprofen/myristic acid particles is enhanced in comparison with that of the unprocessed ibuprofen. For the particles produced by the N-assisted process, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns clearly indicate the encapsulation of ibuprofen into myristic acid. The obtained ibuprofen/tripalmitin composite particles with 5% or 20% of ibuprofen (in mass) evidently show the controlled drug release: only about 20% of the drug is released in 500 min from the ibuprofen/tripalmitin composite particles consisting of 20% ibuprofen prepared by the CO-assisted process, and the same release is obtained from the ibuprofen/tripalmitin composite particles containing 5% ibuprofen prepared by the N-assisted process.

Nanostructured hollow spheres of hydroxyapatite: preparation and potential application in drug delivery

Xiaojing ZHANG, Weixin ZHANG, Zeheng YANG, Zhao ZHANG

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2012, Volume 6, Issue 3,   Pages 246-252 doi: 10.1007/s11705-012-1299-9

Abstract: A solvothermal method has been successfully used to prepare nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) hollow spheres with average diameters of about 500 nm and shell thicknesses of about 100 nm in a glycerin/water mixed solvent. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images show that the shells of the HA hollow spheres are actually composed of nanosheets with thicknesses of about 10 nm. By tuning the glycerin/water volume ratio, two other kinds of HA solid spheres with average diameters of about 6 or 20 μm were assembled from nanoflakes. The properties of the different kinds of spheres as drug delivery carriers were evaluated. Ibuprofen (IBU) was chosen as the model drug to load into the HA samples. The nanostructured HA samples showed a slow and sustained release of IBU. The HA hollow spheres exhibited a higher drug loading capacity and more favorable release properties than the HA solid spheres and thus are very promising for controlled drug release applications.

Cellulose aerogels decorated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes: preparation, characterization, and application

Jian LI,Caichao WAN

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2015, Volume 2, Issue 4,   Pages 341-346 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2015082

Abstract: Electromagnetic wave pollution has attracted extensive attention because of its ability to affect the operation of electronic machinery and endanger human health. In this work, the environmentally-friendly hybrid aerogels consisting of cellulose and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated. The aerogels have a low bulk density of 58.17 mg·cm . The incorporation of MWCNTs leads to an improvement in the thermal stability. In addition, the aerogels show a high electromagnetic interference (EMI) value of 19.4 dB. Meanwhile, the absorption-dominant shielding mechanism helps a lot to reduce secondary radiation, which is beneficial to develop novel eco-friendly EMI shielding materials.

Ferrihydrite preparation and its application for removal of anionic dyes

Yongjuan WU,Wentao ZHANG,Wenxiao YU,Hui LIU,Rufen CHEN,Yu WEI

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2015, Volume 9, Issue 3,   Pages 411-418 doi: 10.1007/s11783-014-0663-z

Abstract: Anionic dyes are hazardous and toxic to living organisms. For this study, ferrihydrite was prepared to test its removal capabilities on anionic dyes. A ferrihydrite particle prepared in neutral environmental conditions is sphere-like with a diameter of 2–4 nm and its total surface area is approximately 229 m ·g . In this paper, the effects of solution pH, competitive anions, and temperature on the adsorption of acid fuchsine onto ferrihydrite and the regeneration-reutilization of ferrihydrite were investigated in detail. The results indicate that ferrihydrite is an efficient sorbent for the removal of acid fuchsine at pH 4.0. The inhibitory effect of various competing anions on the present adsorption follows the precedence relationship: . Adsorption isotherms of acid fuchsine on ferrihydrite fit the Langmuir equation well. The Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy data of adsorption indicate that this adsorption is a spontaneous, exothermic, and physical process. A ferrihydrite was regenerated and reused five times, still retaining its original adsorption capacity.

Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with radial mesopores: Preparation, formation mechanism and application for

Darui Wang, Hongmin Sun, Wei Liu, Zhenhao Shen, Weimin Yang

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 2,   Pages 248-257 doi: 10.1007/s11705-019-1853-9

Abstract: Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with radial mesopores is controllably synthesized using piperidine in a NaOH solution. The piperidine molecules enter the zeolite micropores and protect the zeolite framework from extensive desilication. The areas containing fewer aluminum atoms contain fewer piperidine protectant molecules and so they dissolve first. Small amounts of mesopores are then gradually generated in areas with more aluminum atoms and more piperidine protectant. In this manner, radial mesopores are formed in the ZSM-5 zeolite with a maximal preservation of the micropores and active sites. The optimal hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite, prepared with a molar ratio of piperidine to zeolite of 0.03, had a mesopore surface area of 136 m ·g and a solid yield of 80%. The incorporation of the radial mesopores results in micropores that are interconnected which shortened the average diffusion path length. Compared to the parent zeolite, the hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite possesses more accessible acid sites and has a higher catalytic activity and a longer lifetime for the alkylation of benzene.
